THE KAIKOURA STAR And COUNTY GAZETTE and RECORDER. MONDAY, MARCH 14, 1938. MINISTERIAL VISIT.

All hough there are in the district some who are nor in agreement politically with the Hon. R. Semple, AFinister for Public Works, we believe all will agree [that he has proved himself one of the most practical and capable Public Works Mjnisters to hold the portfolio; also he has been instrumental in greatly assisting back-.block settlors, without confining his energies to any particular portion of the Dominion. Kaikoura certainly lias to be thankful for the works carried out here, including the Conway Bridge, the Puhi J’lihi Bridge, and for a grant made for a bridge over the Charwell on the Stag and Spev Road. These bridges will prove of inestimable value to the settlers in the back country. The construction work on the South Island Main Trunk line has proceeded energetically, the engineers, under .the AFinister, having made wonderful pro-

gress with the aid of up-to-the-minute labour-saving devices. Mr E. P. Meaehen, the co-opted member associated with Mr Semple, has hept his eyes open to the needs of the district, and has performed his part satisfactory. On Saturday next 'Mr Semple will be present at the official opening ceremony in connection with the Puhi Puhi Bridge at 2.30. when it is anticipated that there will be a large gathering to witness the proceedings. Tn the evening he will be present at the 3Tayfair Theatre, whore the Public Works picture will be screened by 31r C. Grainger, following which the Minister will give a short address. It is hoped that the people of Kaikoura, no matter what their political opinions may be, will assemble in force, and signalise their approval of what has been done for Kaikoura and the settlers by the Minister.
