BIRTHDAY PARTY
A very pleasant evening was spent al the home of AFr and Airs W. Hill, of Hinakura recently, when neaarly 70 guests wore entertained at a social evening and dance in honour of their daughter Kathleen’s twenty-first birthday. The guests were received in tho large room, which was arranged for dancing, and was decorated with lemon and green streamers, fastened to a largo hoop hanging in the centre of the room, from which hung lemon and jade balloons,' surrounding a golden key. Afrs Hill received her guests wearing a tailored frock of navy figured satin, wth a posy of violets. Miss Kathleen Hill wore flame satin with black and silver trimmings, and silver spray, and Aliss A’erna Hill was in orange-flame taffeta with sequin cape and silver girdle. The spacious hall, where the presents wore displayed, looked very gay with huge bowls of hydrangeas. Among the many gifts received was a handsome gold wristlet watch given by her father; also a work of art in tho form of a vale key, measuring two feet, made and given by Mr Ralph Shepherd, of Wellington, a play-mate of childhooddays and a son of very old friends of the family. This key was afterwards autographed by everyone present. A sit-down supper was served in the living-room, which was also decorated in lemon and green, the tables looking very effective with howls of roses and gypsophila, and coloured serviettes. The lemon-coloured birthday cake, with its 21 green candles and a. x 4 ladder of time” placed on the top, stood on a silver stand at one end of the room. Air Mitchell, of “Bush Gully,” proposed the toast of Miss Hill, who was accorded musical honours, to which Mr Hill responded. Lucky numbers were drawn at the table, Afr Peter Gaskin, of Wellington being the winner. Between dances, games, competitions, and novelties were indulged in, and a treasure hunt, causing much fun, streamer and confetti dances adding to the gaiety of the evening. Music was supplied by Afisses Joyce and Betty Grant, assisted by Afr P. Gaskin with his mandolin. Altogether a most enjoyable evening was reluctantly brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
