THE KAIKOURA STAR And COUNTY GAZETTE and RECORDER. MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1937. LOCAL AND GENERAL
The annual meeting of members of the Kaikoura Trotting Club is con vened for Tuesday, June 22. The schools in the? town have been closed for ten days owing to a further case of infantile paralysi?; in the town, a boy rosi.ding in. Avoca. Street. A def'.mdant in giving evidence in the Court on Thursday said ho had had one or two drind.s that day. His Worship: “How many is that?” “Oh, throe or four,*"’ replied the witness.
The dance lucid at the Drill Hall on Friday night was an enjoyable affair notwithstanding the meagre- attendance. Airs Sabisto n’s Dance Band supplied the music, extras being played by Mrs F. Smith an d Miss P. Smith. Supper was provided.
In a vase where a man was charged with being on licensed premises contrary to regulations, he told the Magistrate he had not had a drink. “Why?” asked the Magistrate. The answer by the witness could not bo heard for the laughter by those present in the Court. Even the Magistrate had to smile.
There was a moderate attendance at the dance held in the Drill Hall on Saturday night under the supervision of the Kaikoura Ladies’ Hockey Club, but a most enjoyable time was spent. Music f-or the dancing was supplied by Mrs Sabiston’s Dance Band, extras being played by Miss E. Wareham. Mi- M. Perrin was master of ceremonies. The picture competition was won by Mr Hanson, of Aniseed. Supper was served and dancing continued until midnight.
A message purporting to come from Mr C. T. P. Uim, who was lost while flying across the Pacific in December, 1934. has been found in the Invercargill estuary. It was picked up on June 1 by Mr W. J. T. Paulin, of Tramway Road, in :a bottle which was lying on the beach on the east side of the estuary, o pposite Clifton. The police at Tnverc: irgill, to whom the message was hand* 'd, are of the opinion that it is a hoax . Scrawled on a dirty piece of note p aper, apparently with a piece of charre d cork, or bark, the message j's very < j ryptic. It is headed, “Ulm” .and continues: “Am on Pacific Isle, mid-Pacific.”. On the other side of the scrap of paper is another message, this one more personal. *‘l hope wife is I well, ” it reads, and is signed “Ulm.” I The whisky bottle which carriied the rather vague information bore no label, but the conk shows little sign of the long -immersion in salt water it should have had in its journey from the “Pacific ’isle in the mid-Pacific.” “Tn my opini on this is just another hoax.” Seni< rr-Sergeant Kellv told the Southland Timos. “Ulm would surely have been able to give more exact particulars cone .erning the position of the island. And : it seems strange that the bottle sho’ old have found its wav into the esti lary.”
