WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

KAIKOURA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Women’s Institute was held in St. Paul’s Hall on Tuesday last, Mrs N. R. Comer (president) presiding over a moderate attendance. Apologies wore received for the absence of Mesdames T. Hitchcock, B. Hamilton. D. M. Jack, M. La wry, J. J. Gibson, H. A. Fairweather. H. Waghorn, A. W. Bail, A. Boyd, and Miss G. Smith. Final arrangements were made for the institute’s children’s Christmas tree, and an energetic committee was set up Votes of thanks were accorded Mesdames R. L. Withers and W. F. Perrin for their offer of suitable trees for decoration, and to Mesdames J. Cooper and J. P. Smith and Miss M. Oppenheim for donations. A welcome was extended to Mrs J. Cooper, who is at present on a visit to Kaikoura. It was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent, to Mrs Waghorn in the loss of her home by fire recently. Au amusing playette, “A Memory Powder,” was given by members of the Institute Drama Circle and was much enjoyed. Those taking part wore Mrs J. A. Johnston (Mrs Adams), Mrs A. B. Clark (Mr Adams), Miss Monica Mackie (Detective Scott), Miss L. Gordon (Mary the maid), ami Miss M. Oppenheim (Jane the cook). The rose bloom competition was won by Mrs E. H. Morris, Mrs Johnston and Mrs J. Rainey being equal second; sponge cake, Mrs H. Rainey first, Mrs J. Rainey second; shopping-bag made from used material, Mrs 11. Rainey first, Airs J. P. Smith second; roll call, Airs Comer first, Mrs Morris second. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses —Mesdames J. Rainey, W. Sabiston, J. P. Smith, E. Sharplin, J. C. Smith, R. Strahl, and W. R. Stuart An enjoyable afternoon closed in the usual manner
