THE KAIKOURA STAR And COUNTY GAZETTE and RECORDER MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1936. HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER

On two occasions recently at rm’ County Council meetings, Councillor 1.. 11. Cecil-. Ims referred to the importance of Immessing the Clarence River j lor the purpose of generating electric I power and light for the province of Marlborough. As the Hon. R. Semple (Minister fol Public Works) will be in K/iikouru on November .'hl, the opportunity is afforded of bringing I lie question under his notice. In the past Mja riborough, and especially the. southern end of the province, has been too modest in its requests for public nndeita.kings, with life result that we have been very much neglected so far as public expenditure is concerned, and it is time was a new Cinderella was found, ami the province given something akin to its due. Whilst \v e have assisted to pay for the construction of railways, power stations, and huge public buildings in other parts <if Ihe Dominion, Marlbot ough has struggled on carrying its own heavy burdens. With the advent of the Labour Government the main trunk line construction work has been resumed, and the province is receiving a. little more attention. Nevertheless, there are still many important works to be undertaken before Marlborough comes into its own. and the harnessing of the Clareiii'c would go a long way Io improve tile conditions of the people generally and the farming community in particular. There is no need for us to set out the advantages accruing from, electric light and power, Ihe Hon. Semple is well versed in such matters, but it certainly 'would be pleasing Io have his views on the question and to learn whether the Government intends Io make use of the Clarence in the near or distant future. Io link up with Lake Coleridge* system. Surveys and reports have already been made regarding the undertaking, ami perhaps Mr Semple may enlighten us as lo the nature of the reports submit ted to previous Governments. Our County ('hairman can la* relied upon to bring this important question before the Minister for Public Works when in the district.
