PLACEMENT SERVICE OPERATIONS FILLING EXECUTIVE POSITIONS Evidence of the ramifications of the State placement service, now in operation in Now Zealand, is provided in a number of recent appointments to executive positions of men who have been recommended by placement officers. Of special interest in that connection was the placing recently in a very responsible position of a man with executive accountancy experience, the position carrying a salary which is significant of improving economic conditions. The man in question, an Englishman of 28 years’ residence in the Dominion, recently returned from South Africa, where he had been acting in the capacity of chief accountant for a large railway engineering construction company. Seeking an appointment on his return to New Zealand, he was informed that a placement service had been established here and he called at the Wellington office of the service with a view to obtaining information which might be of assistance to him in his quest. It so happened that the placement officers wore in touch with an organisation that was- extending its operations, and that would possibly be requiring the services of a man of the calibre of Mr Blank. An officer got in touch with the executives of the particular organisation, and an interview was arranged for Mr Blank, who was subsequently appointed to the position. This is one of several incidents of
a similar nature where the placement service, watching the employers’ side of affairs, has been able to put a man in line for a position for which he is suited, and at a salary in keeping with his qualifications. Though at its inception the placement scheme was, to a large extent, called upon to provide employment for men of the labouring and artisan classes (chiefly because they were the only men who enrolled), its operations are now rapidly extending to the placing of 'men who come under the category referred to above. Employers, on their side, are increasingly availing themselves of the service’s help in choosing men competent to fill clerical and executive positions.
