GOLD PROSPECTING

MARLBOROUGH’S POSSIBILITIES SURVEY TO BE MADE As a result of an inspection of the goldfields area in Marlborough which has just been completed by Messrs AValter Bromley and J. 8. Hunter, of the Unemployment Promotion Division of the Department of Labour, and Mr S. AV. B*. Strong, chief mining engineer, of Greymouth, an engineer to take charge of the mining in this district, as well as in Nelson and Takaka, is shortly to be appointed. A thorough survey, embracing every aspect of the country is to be made, and if this is as promising as it is anticipated it will be, larger prospecting parties are to bo “put in,’’ and sent right back into new country. At the present time the majority of miners employed under the subsidy scheme are only raking over the old workings, and are not looking for new fields. It is only in very isolated cases, where a prospector works his way on to a piece of new ground, that nuggets are found. Tn the majority of other cases old tailings from which the best of gold has already been extracted by early miners are being washed through. If the survey is satisfactory therefore, new methods are to be adopted, and the .richest localities concentrated on. Other areas not showing the same promise will bo evacuated, and the men put to work where they will have the best chance of securing a return. It is understood that the new scheme is to be put into operation very soon. The party, which was very pleased with the district it inspected, was also Accompanied by Mr A. H. Noes (County Chairman), Mr B. Hundleby (County Engineer), and Mr H. 8. Clarkson (secretary to the Gold-mining Executive). The tour occupied two days, the first day being devoted to. the Wakamarina and Mahakipawa areas and the next day to the Top A’alley and Onamalutu districts.
