Lovelock, at a Government reception held at Parliament Buildings on Monday. There was a distinguished gathering, which included representatives of all branches of spore. Wood, at the farewell tendered to him at Papakura on his resignation as vicar of the parish. 11 People seem to think a clergyman should* be a cross between a woman and a doormat.”

Next Sunday the Rev. W. Morton Ryburn, M.A., of India, is to visit Kaikoura and to give' a lantern service in. St. Paul’s Sunday School at 7.30 p.m. Mr Ryburn has been for fourteen years a missionary in the north of India and is headmaster of a boys’ high school there. In New Zealand Mr Ryburn was-

a representative hockey player, and. needless to say he has made the boys at his school keen on the game. Mr Ryburn is a good speaker with an interesting stoi’y to tell, and ali interested are invited. A strange bird, whfdi has been identified as a kookaburra, was seen last week in the vicinity of the Maunu Cemetery, about three miles from Whangarci. The bird, which resembled a large kingfisher, wjps very tame, ami it was possible to approach within a few feet of it. “It. is likely that the kookaburra came from Kawau Island.” said Mr R. A. Falla, ornithologist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, commenting on the report. “The bird was liberated on the island many years ago by Sir George Grey, and occasionally it is reported on the mainland in the vicinity of Kawau. About twelve years ago a kookaburra arrived in Devon port, but it was thought that this bird travelled down the coast on a scow. Although it is unlikely,” continued Mr Falla, “it would not be impossible for the bird to have been blown across the Tasman Sea from Australia by strong winds. A kookaburra was once reported on the coast near Cape Maria Van Diemen, after a north-west gale.” CHRISTCHURCH MAN TORTURED Rescued From Rheumatic Agony! “The transformation effected by R.U.R. has been marvellous.
