The dance held in the Drill Hall on Saturday night, under the supervision of St. Michael’s Tennis Club, was well attended and a very enjoyable time was spent by all. Surprise is caused by the choice of John Crouch, aged 21, who has just completed his apprenticeship with Stanley Wootton, as the King’s first joeikey for the coining season. The appointment of a young rider is due to a desire to avoid such frequent changes in Royal jockeys as has occurred in the. past. Crouch has ridden 31 winners this season;

Considerable alarm has been aroused among farmers in the Aushburton county by the operations over a wide area of thieves who have been removing wool from sheds where shearing has been finished or is in progress, according to a. report by Air H. S. Richards, of Valetta. Mr Richards finished his first shearing on October 24 and some odd lots of wool wore left in the shed to be added to when the main shearing is begun. On Wednesday morning when Air Richards visited the shed he found that approximately. £l2 worth of wool and skins had been taken away, evidently by motor-lorry, as the traciks of a heavy vehicle could be seen leading up to the shed. Owing to the nature of their construction it is impossible to make shearing sheds proof against unauthorised entry, and some enterprising thieves have evidently been quick to realise their advantage. Another case of a similar nature was reported from Ruapuna last week, and also the disappearance of two bales from a woolshed near Rakaia. The thefts have been reported to the police, but tracing stolen wool is likely to prove a difficult matter.
