Germany attaches importance to the commercial advantages she expects to receive in Abyssinia in return for recognition of Italy’s conquest. It is believed that German industry will play an important part in the development of the country and will obtain substantial supplies of the colonial raw materials so badly needed. There was one of the largest congregations of racegoers at Trentham for many years on Monday, and despite early reverses, investors were keen in their patronage of the totalisator. The turnover amounted to £61,824, the first time since pre-depression days that the £60,000 mark had been reached at any meeting. The figures were a long way in excess of last year’s, but twelve months ago it was very wet on the Labour Day holiday.
