The Commonwealth Statistician (Mr E. T. McPhee), giving evidence before the commission which is enquiring into the question of increasing the Commonwealth grants to Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania, said the cost of social services in Australia was more than £30,000,000, of which £11,000,000 represented old age and invalid pensions. RU T GBY, May 6. Between 1926, when the use of parachutes was made compulsory in the Royal Air Force, and the .beginning of the present year, 109 lives have been saved by their use.
