CONVENT PUPILS’ CONCERT
AN ENJOYABLE EVENING. There was an attendance of anout 500 at the Drill Hall on Thursday night on the occasion of the concert given by the pupils of the local Convent, and the performers acquitted theinselv<?s most creditably, *he huge audience being appreciative and enthusiastic, and demanding encores to nearly every item. Those responsible for the training of the children and organising the concert are to be complimented on the splendid programme submit rl. Pride of place must, be given to -Masters ?J. and P. Keehan and Leo Smith, in the humorous *r:o, “Jim, Joe and Jargc.” the performers putting plenty of action into the song, a double encore being demanded. “The Golliwogs,” by the junior pupils was a good runner up in the boys’ section. Miss N. Borland excelled hertclf in her voeai items, “God put n. Rose in My Garden.” and “Lavender Gown,” and the musical monologue, “The Soliloquy of a Safety Pin,” recall numbers being demanded on each occasion. Miss M. Palmer \v: s also most successful in her song “Bells of Brittany,” and in the duet with Miss Burland, “Sing, Sing, Binis on the Wing,” and responded to encores. In the part song, “Pond Lillies,” Alisses N. Burlanl, M. Palmer, 8. Miles, M. Wareham, M. Kechan, and R. Lanyon gave a very pleasing performance; while Misses Theresa Burrell and K. Kechan delighted the audience in ihc humurous duet “The Two Dolls”; Misses M. Kechan and R. Lanyon were very successful in the character duet, “Two Irish Songs.” The pianoforte duet, “Merry Wives of Windsor,” by Misses, D. Harlc and J. Thomas was well executed, as also was the item
“King of the Forest,” by Misses A. Warner and B. Borthwick, the artistes having to respond with recall numbers. Miss Jean Thomas contributed the solo, “Rhapsody Nd. 2” (Liszt), in a pleasing manner. The pianoforte trio, “Three Friends,” by Misses Clare and -M. Wallace and V. Richardson was accomplished most creditably, as also was the Spanish Dance by Misses 8. Smith, E. Burrell, M. Boyd, and R. Chisnall. Miss M. Kechan was most pleasing in her vocal solo, “Don’t Hurry,” as also was Miss J. Chisnall in the character song, “Little Chink.” Miss Peggy Wallace played the violin selection “Thais” with good execution, and was most successful in “Scottish Melodies” with Miss J. Wareham, Master R. Wallace and Miss M. Wallace (piano). “The Fairies’ March and Song” by the infants, Miss Theresa Burrell taking the solo part, proved a delightful item. Other items, all of a pleasing character were the chorus “Sleepy Town Express” by the infants; drill song. “The Fencers,” senior girls; character chorus “Gipsies We,” junior girls; “Anchors A weigh” and “The World’s Alright” by the boys; character song “The Dutch Fair,” junior girls; “The Shepherd’s Dance,” senior girls; and the action song, “Cockadoodlc, Don’t” by the junior girls. There was not a dull moment in the programme, and the audience expressed its delight with the performers by voicifcrous applause. During an interval the Rev. Father Saunderson expressed his pleasure at seeing such a large and enthusiastic audience present, and thanked the performers and those who had arranged the entertainment for a most enjoyable evening. He reminded those present that the Town School concert would be held next week, and trusted that it would receive the same generous support as that accorded the Convent conThe Accompanistes for the evening were Misses Monica Mackie, M. Strahl, D. Harlc, S.’ Miles, C. and M. Wallace.
