CLERK’S DEATH.

FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED. PALMERSTON, August 24. Suspicion surrounds the death of Edwin John Blakeway, a clerk, employed at the Palmerston North Rail, way Station, who was found dead this morning on a country by-road at Karere. six miles from the city, with bullet wounds in the head, chest and arms. Blakeway visited friends on Sunday night, who lived about a mile from scene of the tragedy. and spent a pleasant evening. He left on his return to Palmerston North at 11 o’clock and his oody was discovered by a newspaper runner at 7-30 to-day. At first it was thought he had fallen from a bicycle he was riding, but the machine was not -damaged, and appeared to have been carefully placed on the road. The. body was lying on the grass fifteen feet further on. Foul play is suspected. Blakeway was 26 years of age. His parents reside in Avonhcad Road, Upper Riccarton. PALMERSTON N.. August 25. The police are now convinced that Edwin John Blakeway, a railway clerk, aged 26, who was found dead on the Longburn.Karcre road early yesterday morning, was murdered. A post-mortem examination revealed bullet wounds in the hand, wrist, chest, and head. It is believed that the shots were fired from cither a repeating rifle or an automatic revolver. Five empty cartridge shells were found at the scene of the crime.
