There is some speculation in the country as to why hawks are working such havoc among lambs this season (states the Timaru Herald), some farmers asserting that they are more destructive this year than ever before. One explanation which has been given of this in the country is that rabbit poisoning has been so successful this season that rabbits are more scarce than they have been for a very long time, and that in the absence of young rabbits to cat tho hawks are attacking the lambs. In tho Magistrate’s Court at Dunedin on Wednesday, Leonard Clement, a onearmed man, w’as sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour for being found on the private premises of George Waikley without lawful excuse. After hearing the evidence, Mr Bartholomew, 8.M., said that accused was evidently not on the premises for theft, so he must be something in the nature of a i>ervert or a “Peeping Tom. ’ ’
