Gold In Street
Central Australian Find | I Sydney, Sept 21 j The discovery of gold in the main street of Tennant Creek, Central Australia, has eaused excitement; among the residents. An ironstone outcrop extending across the road, over which hundreds of people’’have walked, has been found to contain gold. The discovery was made by Mr Walter Freeman, who has pegged out a mining lease. The gold-bear-ing roek extei d i from under the Australian Inland Mission, across the main\street, and through the police station property. Some uncertainty exists as to whether a i mineral lease which embraces a [ street can be worked. Tennant Creek, in one of the most arid regions of Australia, has been producing substantial, though not sensational, quantities of gold for at least five years. It is a typical little mining town of about 800 people. A few early miners made iui tunes from rich pockets, but-, the gold bearing quartz is not plentiful and is difficult to mine. Government assistance in ' providing batteries and boriog plant for wells enabled difficult cond tio s |to be overcome. The present, high I price of gold mikep- the field a 1 commercial proposition. Aeroplane services h ve pTv d an important part in iis services.
