A Hymn of Hate
Tbe outbursts *f fury from official Nazi sources at Mr Chemberleio’s refusal of Hitler's “peace offensive” proposals have a marked similarity to the hatred which rose against Britain in the early stages of the Great War. Tbe following poem by a German in 1914. described by Mr John Buchan, now Lord T weedstnnir, Governor-General of Canada, in " Nelson's Hisoory of the War " as “ the scream of jangled and unstrung nerves,’’ is a vigorous expression of this passion : "Take you tbe folk of tbe Earbb in pay. With bars of gold your ramparts lay. Bedeck tbe ocean with bow on bow. Ye reckon well, but not well enow. French and Russian they matter not, A blow for a blow and a shot for a shot; We fight the battle with bronze and steel, And tbe time that is coming peace will seal. You we will hate with a lasting bate, We will never forego our hate, Hate by water aDd bate by land, Hate of the head and bate of the head. Hate of the hammer and hate of the orpwn. Hate Of. our millions choking down. We love as one, we hate as one, We have one foe and pqe alone— ISo gland!"
