The National Account^ While the national account! reveal an improving budgetary position, the figures released by the Minister of Finance give an indication of the magnitude of the burden heing borne by the New Zealand taxpayer. Twenty years ago, the receipts drawn Into the Consolidated Fund totalled £12,229,611, ,and the outgoings were £11,825,864. Moreover, in that year the value of the Dominion’s exportable produce was £26,253,923, and the imports were valued at £21,144,227. Many changes have taken place in twenty years, of course, and increasing claims have bad te be met out of the national exchequer. I The Dominion cannot plunge deeply into debt without incurring an annual charge to meet interest and sinking fund payments, while a young, developing and progressive country cannot enjoy generous social services without having to meet the ever increasing annual charges.—Timaru Herald.
