Quakes in Australia Severe Shoek at Gunning Reed 10 a.m. Sydney, This day Reports of earth tremors have been received from districts on the southern tablelands. At Gunning, a severe shock lasted about thirty seconds. Houses were shaken and plaster fell from the walls. Minor vibrations occurred during the day, causing alarm among the residents. * Felt at Avoca People rushed from their homes at Avoca, when a severe shock was felt there. Cracks in Roads Cracks two inches wide appeared on the Hume highway, one of the main roads from Sydney to Melbourne. Goulbourn also experienced slight tremors.

Reed io o a.m Canberra, I his day The Minister of External Affairs, Hon Mr Pearce, announced that he will leave for New Zealand next I Saturday to attend a three days’ conference with the Dominion Government representatives and Sir Maurice Hanfeey, Secretary of the Empire Defence Committee, on an Empire plan for the co-ordination of the Pacific defences. The party sailing on the Wanganella includes Hon and Lady Pearce, Sir M. and Lady Hankey, the ControllerGeneral of Munitions Supply, Mr A E Leighton and the Secretary of the Australian Council of Defence, Mr F. G. Shedden. _ Empire Service League Conference Increase of Defence Urged Reed ii 25 a - m - \ Melbourne. Nov 13 While emphasising a keen desire for peace, the delegates of the Empire Service League Conference agreed to a motion by Mr Perry of New Zealand, urging that Britain increase her sea, land and air defences to guard her national honour. Mr Perry said that Britain had reduced her defences to such an extent as imperilled the safety of the Empire. It was possible the present navy was inadequate to protect the trade routes.
