(We are not to be identified with opinions expressed by correspondents.) AMURTPAS3 The following letter was forwarded to the Minister of Public Works by Mr K. J. Holyoake M.P : (To the Editor) SIR —Enclosed with this letter are two newspaper clippings relevant to the promotion of the Lewis Pass Road and alternate routes from the West Coast, South Island to Canterbury. ' It would appear that there is a decided push- ffor a route over the Amuri Pass, s it being argued that this is the more central rout. In point of fact the Lewis Pass rtp.fi is the natural, most economic and

undoubtedly the most suitable commercial rout inasmuch as it is in almost direct line with Nelson, Marlborough and Westport on the one aide and Christchurch on tfce j other. While there is already direct communication through Otira for Greymouth and Westland generally. All aspects of the proposed routes considered, I have no hesitation in saying that the Lewis Pass road is undoubtedly the project which should be pushed on to a conclusion. If the newspaper article is well informed I wish to register a protest against money being spent on the approaches to the Amuri Pass while so short a distance of | construction is needed to complete j the Lewis Pass. If any money is | available for construction work on a I rout connect West with East of the South Island it should be expended on the Lewis Pass rout. In view of these newspaper reports I would be obliged for a report from you as to the position.
