(United Press Assn—By Electric i Telegraph—Copyright.) i London, July 17 The death is announced of Sir i John Ellerman. one of the richest men in Britain" who was reporied to . be worth jE30,000 000. | Although among London’s largest 1 landowners, he was almost unknown j to the public. His income was es- j timated at £1,000,000 yearly, of which he spent only 5 per cent, vesting the surplus. He gave gen i erously to charity. I It is believed that no millionaire in the world has suffered so little as Sir John Ellerman did from the , depression, because of the high 3 values of everything with which his l name was associated. Sir John Ellerman was described as a modern l Dick Whittington. He came to London as a clerk and soon begin t business for himself as an account" ant. Sir John Ellerman knew noth* j ing about shipping, but at the age of j 27 he formed a company to buy the Leyland Line. He afterwards bought j a other lines which were in low water, • and became known as the Shipping t Wizard ” as he turned them all into prosperous paths. At one time he j ’’ controlled nearly 300 ships, and knew I y without reference to documents, ex* where each was and the freight it carried.
