The Judge said that this section had heen a very interestng one. He whs -not a great heUerer in “own choice’’ selections for the contests, though there was a lot to he said for them from the point of view of the public. The work he had heard had heen of a fairly high standard. Some of the bands had undertaken selections which were beyond their abilities and one had chosen a task that was far too easy. At the close of the contest the musical judge, Mr Prank Wright, said tile greatest fault he had found with New Zeaalnd hands was the untunefulness and he suggested that conductor could remedy this defect by assiduous practice of hymn tunes. Another point was that all bands were too loud. There was a great difference between full tone noise and the New Zealand bands would be improved gTeatly if conductors insisted on softer playing.
