Clergyman Removed
Tried to be a “Man’s Man”
A number of parishoners of Hiilingdon, Middlesex, lately ssnt a memorial to the Bishop of London in connection with the removal of the Rev H Hamilton-Maugban, the priest-in-charge of All Saints Mission. He was removed on the ground that the mission would not prosper under his leadership.” Father Hamilon-Maugban, who is an Anglo-Catholic, went to Hillingd- n in November, 1930 and was the first priest-in-ebarge of tbs tiny cbnrcb which is situated od one boundary of a new bousing' estate. He frequently visited tho Hillingdon and district social and sports club, and while there be sometimes bad drinks with tha members and joined in their sports, playing darts and other games.
When seen at" the Club after bis removal. Father Haroihon-Maugban said : “ Actually 1 think the trouble has been caused by the * old women 1 of both sexes in the church. I feel that this trouble has come upon me because I have tried to be a man’s man and to get inside the church the people most wanted there. I am a tumble follower of one who was called, and I say with reverence, was tvovd to he called, a friend of publirgns and sinners. If Christ had be on .artb now, I sav with all reverence, that He would have visited clubs and bad a drink with members and tried to-get them inside the Church.
“ All the time I have been at Hillingdon I have tried to preach the true Christian faith, and nothing else. Now that I have been told t'o go, and unless I can get another job, the only prospect before my wife, n>V child, and myself is starvation. We have to leave, and I would willingly give up the church and take a position outside. That does Dot mean I am williug to give up my rehgton. I am an Anglo-Catholic, and proud of it, and will not lower that flag for anyone. Father Hamilton-Maugban has since bad the offer of a curacy in the North of EngiandAn official of All Saints stated that the section responsible for the memorial was a comparatively small one. “ Nothing has been done by the church officially,” he said, “Among a certain section of tbei congregation I know -there is a feeling that Father HamiltonMaugban has been wronged, but in this, as in all qoestions, there are two sides.”
