's**** Pro** RAIN IN CANTERBURY A RICH XMAS GIFT CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Indications are that Canterbury may receive a rich Christmas gift from the skies. A rainstorm has heen sweeping up the South Island and today South Canterbury had useful rain estimated at upwards of a quarter of an inch and more rain jfs threatening. Heavier rain fell at Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia. Light showers have reached Christchurch and Rangiora, and Lyttelton had a heavier shower with a thunder storm. There seems a good prospect of good rain breaking the dry spell of several months.

FALL FROM BALCONY WOMAN OP 60 TEARS CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. An inmate of Nazareth House Orphanage and Old People’s Home, conducted by the Sisters of Nazareth, fell from the balcony today and was killed. The woman was Mrs Johanna Maloney, Of Geraldine, aged 80. The inquest was held this evening by Mr Lawry, S.M., wbo found tbat the safety precautions at the institution were adequate and there was no of neglect or lack of attention on the part of Sisters in charge. The evidence was, that Mrs Maloney had heen an inmate for a week. She was senile and infirm mentally, hut not particularly feeble for her age. She was in bed, apparently restful, when the Sister was called away and during her absence, Mps Maloney evidently got out of bed and fell from the balcony.
