Pit Owner’s Losses
Lady Londonderry’s Story The Marchioness of Londonderry speaking in support of Mr A. Denville, Conservative candidate for Newcastle Central, protested against the mode of electioneering of his Socialist opponent, Sir Charles Trevelyan. “At the last election, when my son fought Darlington,” she said, "Sir Charles came to Darlington and said, “The Londonderry family only take part in political work to save their swag.” “At that time my husband was having heavy losses on the Old I Seaham pit and decided to close it. But at the urgent request of the Miners’ Federation'he agreed to go on, and kept that pit working for two years at a loss of jgI.OGO a weekmoney which he had to borrow. He also sunk New Vane Tempest pit—this, too, on money he had to borrow ; close upon a million pounds. He mortgaged hts future because it had for generations been the tradition of his family in Durham to give employment and good wages to the people there, and he had had to close Wynyard, which had for long been the home of his family in Durham.”
