T of Barncgo, near Balclutha, while trout fishing on Pomahaka yesterday with a party of anglers, became separated from his companions and when j 1.0 did not arrive at the appointed , meeting place in the evening, fears were entertained for his safety. Search parties were organised and , this afternoon the missing man’s rod ( and line were found. Dragging operations were commenced and Smith’s body was later recovered in about 20 feet of water. CRUELTY TO KITTEN. SAILOR “ASSAULTS”- YOUNGSTER - AUCKLAND, Dec. 6. At the Police Court this morning, Archibald Larkin, of H.M.S. Dunedin, was charged with assaulting Kenneth Scott, aged four. Larkin did not appear, but was represented by Mr Armstead, of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Ani mala. Mr Arm9tead said that Larkin, together with his wife and sister-in-law, were sitting on the verandah of their home at Devonport when he saw two small boys throwing a little kitten in- - to the drain several times and pulled 1 1 it out again by the tail. Larkin > ' remonstrated with the boys. One ran I away home and his mother gave him ' I a smacking. Mr Hunt: That was the proper thing to do. Mr Armstead .added that Larkin picked up the other boy, Kenneth . Scott, and said: “How would you liki i to be put in the drain?” The boy’s ! arm went into the drain. Mr Hunt: Is that the alleged as sault? “Yes,” said counsel. Sub-Inspcctro McCarthy said then was another side to the story. Tht little boy was only four, and his hea.. and shoulders were dipped into tht Mr Armstead said he had three in dependent, witnesses who would deny that. Mrs Scott gave evidence. The plant will readily be capable of extension to treat timber for other Departments.
