In our advertising columns, the I County Chairman requests the ; business people to observe Monday afternoon next, the occasion of the visit of His Excellency the Governor in lieu of the usual Wednesday half holiday. A Wellington wire says that Wm. Scotland, a well-known N.Z. aviator has decided to join the aviation corps at the front. He sails for England in about thiee weeks' time. In discussing the possibilities of flying in New Zealand, Mr Scotland expressei an opinion that Canterbury is the best district and if a school of aviation is ever set up in the Dominion Christchurch was the most suitable centre.

There was an excellent attendance at the Theatre Royal last night on the occasion of the display of McLean's Pictures. These as usually is the case were excellent. The picture of the bathing at. Coney Island was admirable in every way, and was an eye opener as to the manner in which surf bathing has caught on in New York. The dramas were all that could, be wished for and the play "Little Red Riding Hood " was a remarkably pretty bit of wo;k, "Real Turkish" was a most amusing and interesting picture and all the other pictures were greyly appreciated. Good music was supplied by Miss Banks and Messrs Anderson and Stevenson.
