A deputation waited on the Miu'ster of Lands in order to protest against tbe leasing of the Macquarie Island to New Zealand. The main objection wbb that the Island was useful in connection with whaling. Proposals ware afoot for resuscitating > Tasmam&n* whaling, md the success of the enterprise greatly depended on being able to use the island a? a dep t. The Miii^er said New Zealand's offer was made with no intention of interfering with Tasraanian rights, but to prevent the Island being used by poachers now swooping down from Campbell and other islands to destroy the seals out of season.
