RACING ON THE WEST COAST.

, The following appeared in a recent issue of the- Referee : We are glas. to, be. able to record a distinct improvement in the conduct of race meetings on the West Coast of this island. It will be remembered that the special travelling correspondent of this journal attended the late Christmas meetings on the Coast, and in the course of his letters pointed out several ' defects in their management, laying great stress on the want of punctuality observed and the slipshod manner in many instances, in which the various details in connection with the officials' duties were performed. We were quite prepared to hear that our representative's remarks would bear good fruit, and it affords us a deal of gratification now to learn that the meetings just brought to a conclusion at Greymouth and Reofton were carried out in a manner that was creditable to the officials. Both of these fixtures had to be more than once postponed owing to the bad weather, but in face of these and other drawbaoks they were brought to a successful issue. In the official programme of the Reefton J.C. the following notice appeared:—"lnvestors on the totalisator are requested to make their investments promptly, as strict punctuality will be observed in starting the races." Seeing that the starting on the West Coast has hitherto been delayed to any length of time in the interest of the totalisator, it is pleasing to see the Reef ton Club taking a forward step, and making an endeavour to conduct its meetings like those of other reputable Clubs. The Reefton Club are now making inprovements to their coxirse, laying down a training track and effecting other alterations, that will no doubt bo appreciated by owners and trainers. Their zeal will be sure to receive its proper reward, and we hope this Club, the Greymouth and other racing institutions on the West Coast will at their Christmas meetings find that they have received increased support from owners other than those residing in their midst. We have no doubt of one thing anil that is that racing on the West Coast is going ahead and improving' as it goes. Long may it continue.
