Received April 17, at 8 p.m. London, April 18. The Society of Engineers announce that the expenses for the quarter exceeded the income by £27,000. Those engaged in the cotton trade have agreed to a conference with the employers. But in the event of it not resulting satisfactorily, 52,000 people will be thrown out of work. The Chronicle asserts that since the Durham miners went out on strike, a million and a quarter was lost in wages. Sir George Elliott accuses some of the mine-owners with malicious opposition, but it is expected that in order to preserve the mines, some of those who did not propose a reduction will resume work. The Post asserts that the French consuls report that the introduction of Victorian butter into the English market is a warning to Normandy manufacturers. The Hon A. J. Balfour was received in Ireland as the friend and saviour of the peasantry, and Healey and O'Brien are afraid to appear on the platform unless Balfour's friends are there to protect them. The commission of H.M.S. Satellite in the pacific will be cancelled, but that of H.M.S. Daphne remains in force. New York, April 19. Several cargoes of natives have been conveyed from Gilbert Islands to Guatemala, and it is believed they are slaves. Edison claims to have invented a flying machine, and an electric motor, by which rain can be procured by means of dynamite. Traders assert that the King of Dahomey two centuries ago buried treasure in Portonovo, and say that that explains the French anxiety to capture the country. Ottawa, April 19. Canada offers to renew the " modus vivendi " with Newfoundland pending I a conference. I St. Petersburg, April 19. The order of the " Knight of St. George," is spreading in Russia. Madrid, April 19. Absiud, the soldier who committed the outrage in a church, has been arrested. Paris, April 19. The natives have repulsed the French expedition proceeding to Lake Tchad.
