THE Inangahua Times, PUBLISHED DAILY. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1891. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

About midnight last night the electric light suddenly gave out and our office was left in total darkness. We have not ascertained tho cause of this annoying circumstance, but as our comps were compelled to work by candle-light our readers must excuse us for holding over a leading article on the Midland Railway Company,

Electric Light»—^Before adopting the above get an estimate from . John HortOn. Establishments fitted in accordance With Fire insurance requirements at from 20 to 80 per cent under Reefton prices.

Mr Edward Blackmore arrived in Reef • ton from Christchurch on Tuesday. He brought With him the racehorses Miss Ann and The Ace, both of whom will compete at the forthcoming Christmas meeting.

The Eev. Mr Walker delivered his lecture on Temperance in the Methodist Church last night to a good attendance. A condensed report wiU appear in our next issue.

When Mr Seddon was in Reefton we wore given to understand that he intended re-visiting this town on Tuesday last. We notice by the Kumara Times, • how ever, that he was to have met a deputation of the Borough Council in Hokitika yesterdayi The same paper also intii niate4-jbhat he wot 4^J>^ftf«6,fiifißJffl^o,^

"We learn that work with the Matakitaki dredge has been suspended owing to a breakage in the machinery. At least three weeks will elapse before the dredge will be in going order, as the damage can only be remedied by getting new material frotu Dunedin. Since starting this company have been very unfortunate ; they had in fact to contend against difficulties which were quite unforseen. However, it is satisfactory to learn that notwithstanning the unfavorable circumstances under which work has been pursued, payable gold was obtained and in due time there is every likelihood of the Company obtaining their well-meri-ted reward.

The latest news from the Hercules is of a vary favorable nature. The stone which had recently become broken, is now quite solid and carries payable gold. We learn also that the reef has been struck in the winze of the No. 2 South Keep-it-Dark and is also of good quality.

We remind our readers of the lecture on the African Slave Trade, which will be delivered by Bey. Father Briand, in the Boys' Schoolroom this evening. The subject is interesting and will be ably handled by the Rev. gentleman, and it is to be hoped he will be greeted by a good house.

The only cases dealt with in the Warden's Court yesterday were the applications of P. Smith for a tail-race, and Geo. Wise for a head-race and tramway for the Caledonian Company (Larry's). Both applications were granted. In the larceny case of Police v. Wright, His Worship said he had been unable to give accused the benefit of the Probation Act, and she was therefore imprisoned until the rising of the Court. The case of Morrison v. Morrison was rather a novel one, the plaintiff being a daughter-in-law of defendant and she sued for the support of defendant's grand-daughter, who was aged four years. After the evidence His Worship refused to make an order. A lad named Edv.ard Duggan was fined 5s and costs for exploding crackers. Several debt cases were next dealt, including that of Thomas and Mcßeath v. Wastneys, a claim of £6 odd, judgment being given with costs in each case.
