MINING NEWS.

-*. » THE I WEEK.' r [From oub Mining Eepo?tei ' "?• j^., ;• sH«-,;.. ■>;-■ Saturday, Augutt ;^;S^ The proverbial has succeeded the proverbial storm, and for the time being business proceeds in mining matters as gravely and smoothly as though a "spurt" was a thing quite unknown. The present week has closed in with* out an incident worthy of note. There was a slight movement in Pactolus shares about Wednesday last, and arose from the fact that the supposition that the drive had crossed the line of reef, had been shown to be erroneous, a survey of the mine proving that the tunnel had not reached within 30ft of the spot where the lode should be intersected, Homeward Bounds also received some attention, but the advance made was only slight. The progress being made with the erection of the batteries for the Lankey's Creek and Golden Point Companies respectively, is being watched with the greateit interest, and with a general confidence that the starting of those batteries will encourage another great stride in the development of the field.

The following are the battery returns for the past week :— Keep-it-Dark,— 7s4joz. amalgam from 198 tous stone. Quantity i of retorted gold obtained for , the month, 4380z. ldwt
