THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1878.
DimiNa the paat few days some father i ugly rumors have beeu curront in Reefton relative lo tho disposition of i eortain moneys subscribed by tho publio about twelvo mf nMis ago, in aid of tho widow and family of tho late Henry do Tonre'ttea. Ifc will bo recollected thnt in October of last year a ouni of . £101 was subscribed in Heefton in nidof | widow do Touretfce, and an eutortaii • mont was also given by tho amnteura j when a further cura of about £30 or £40 was raised for the same lady. Subscription lists were also circulated at Black's Point, Murray C ree It and Boatman's, in the same intcreat, ond the total sum got together is believed to bo about £240. Of this amount ifc was roporled, Mrs de Tourctlos had only received some £51. Tt is only rocently thut tho uubacribera became aware of this state of affairs, and as tho matter at tho first blush bore a rathor serious complexion, we, at the request of corlain of the subscribers, made in> quiries upon tho subject, tho result of which wo now give. We were on Mon« day last informed by widow de Tou« retto tbattho total sum abe had received is £41, £30 of which was given to her by Mr L. Day ies, and £11 as tbe amount subscribed in Greymouth, which sho received direct frou the col« lectors, She informed us that Mr L. Davies is tho treasurer or custodian of tho money subscribed ; but though she had applied to him on several occasions for tho money or some portion 1 of it, was unsuccessful, It is nearly ' twelve months sinco her husband died and though tho monoy has been re \ presented as being in Mr Uavieu' . hands for about teu months, she has , been compelled to take in washing in ) . order to savo hersolf and her young ' family from starvation, Mr» de Tourettes showed us Iho town subscription list upon which there wore suuib to the amount of £101, which is said to have been paid into tho National Bank about ten months ago to the credit of, as sho believes, Mr Davies, as her trustee. Of the Black's Point, Boatman's, ond othor lists she knows nothing whatever, they being, as sho believes, in Davies* possession. Latterly Mrs do TouretleH bad been so sorely pressed for money that she was compelled to give her tradesmen orders upon Mr Davies, but somehow these orders have not beou paid. Not litter than tho present month Mrs de Tourotte? applied unavailingly to Mr Davies for money, and though he 'pro* mised to let her have some a week or a fortnight ago, ho has failed or neglected to do so. These aro tho simplo facts as communicated to us by the widow heruclf, and they must 1 speuk for themselves, What excuse or explanation Mr L. Davies may havo to make for his conduct in this matter we are unable to say, but ns tho sub* scribors, will, we believe, meet this morning for the purpose of inquiring into the matter wo, shall abstain at present from offering nny comments upon tho caao.
