During the compromise discussion of 1850, a lady from Goorgia k aerompauiid by her husband, called on Mr Clay at the National Hotel. He was extremely busy, and sent down a card Hpologising and expressing ibe hope tbnt they wonld call again in the morning. But the Indy would not be put ofl 1 so easily, ahe immcdialely wrote him o beautiful note, in a beautiful hand, in which she said that she and her husband had cosne some hundred miles out of their way bo see hiia, and bejjging the honor of a brief interview; as they were Wider th» lwcessity of leav. irg that evening. The great Kentucky statesman of course made a graceful sufrender. The party were introditced and a pleasant conversation foilawed,. which Mr Clay himself seemed to enj^y no less than his guests. As it was drawing to a close the lady remarked that she had still another favor to ask, the reference to which s.eemed to give her some embarrassment. What is it madam, .if you please ? ' Sir." said she, ' before leaving home I told my friends that I would not only see Mr Clay, Wt that I would be kissed by him V 'My dear randam, 1 said he, rising, *as Mr Lowmle r of the Presidiencv^ that is an honor neither to be sought aor declined.' and the hidy's wish was* gratified .— Richmond Whig.
