THE Provincial Cpifncil of Otago being fl«sirous of etiuiulating- inyention, and securing the use .oi gold saving apparatus in connection wit.h hydraulic mining adapted to Ihe purpose of extract-ing gold from .auriferous earth nioivo onujctely than any of the machines or methods at present in use, has voted the sum of £2.50, to be offered as v bonus for .the invention of such an apparatus, subject tp such competition and regulations as his Honor Iho Superintendent way seem lit. The plans and proposals will be submitted to a body of judges, composed of sxperienced miners, aud suoh other persons as his Honor the, Supii'tntendent may appoint, and in considering them the following poiuts will be kept in vieyy :•-- 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan, undlts probable cost and tear aud wear. 2. Its adaptability to the different widths and fulls of t»il races used in dilierent districts ; to the yarying quantities of water used either by ehojpo or necfisoity for flushing the same ; and lo the dilierent kinds of washdirt from which gold is oltaiued in the Province. Inventors are expected to bo conversant with the machines and methods at present in ute, and not to oiler simple reproductions of the same. They are also expected not to offer reproductions of machines of methods which have fallen into disuse. If, in tho opinion of the judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy ot adoption by,.the miners in the Province, the Government undertakes' tbiUrnish copies pf the samp to each of the Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions as to inventions of tne inventors, and the payment of thti bonus will the?) be determined in tho following manner, payment being due within eight months from the date at- which the copies of the' plans and instructions havo been issued to the various Mining Associations. By the fact of the apparatus being used by at least twenty-live sluicing compapies in the Province, employing an average of at least five men each, fjr the period of six months, and the intention of the jsame companies to contjnuo the use thereof ; such fact and such intention being verified by the afiirinatipn before a' Warden,' 1 of thp Managora or repier sentatives of such companies. In the event of two or more plans being considered worthy of trial, the Government will determine in what manner the competition shall be carried on, and the best plan disr covered. As fche bonus is only injbended to simulate inventive genius, every invouter may reap a further benefit fauin his invention if he thiuk fit, by taking out a patent.
