TIIJS Proyineial Council of Otago being d'-xirous of stimulating invention, and 6«euring *he use ol gold saving apparatus in connection with hydraulic mining adapted to Liu* purpose of extract ing gold from auriferous earth more eonplel.ely than any of the macliincs or methods at present in use, lias voted the sum ol £250, to be offered as a bonus lor the invention of such an apparatus, subject to fiicli competition and regulations as his Honor Iho Superintendent may seem lit. Notice is hereby given iv accordance with the vote of the Council, that plans and proposal* tor such an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till the first day of August next ensuing.. 'JL'liw following particulars are published for the information of intended . ex. libitor? of plans. The plans and proposals will be submitted to a body of judges, composed of experienced miners, ami such other persons as his Honor the Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them the following points will be kept in view : — 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan, and its probable cost and tear aud wear. 2. The readiness with which it can be secured in any part of a tail race, and be removed from on« part to another and again secured. 3. Its adaptability to the different widths and lallrt ot tail races need in did'erent districts ; to the varying quantities of Water used either by choice or neces^ty for Hushing the same j and to the different kinds of washclirt from which gold is oltained in the Province. Inventors arc expected to bo conversant with the machines and methods at present in uue, aud not to oiler siniplo reproductions ol the same. They are also expected not to offer reproductions of machines or methods which have fallen into disuse. They can obtain practical information on these aud other points, by application through the post to the Central Mining Association at Kaseby. If, in the opinion of the judges appointed any plan Bhall appear to be worthy ot adoption by the miners in the Province, the Government undertakes to Jurnish copies of the same to each of the Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, and the payment of the bonus will then bo determined in the following manner, payment being due witiiiu eight months from the date at which the copies of the plans and instructions have been issued to the various Mining Associations. jjy the fact of the apparatus being used by at least tvventy-tive sluicing companies in the Province, employing an average ot at least live men each, fjr the period of six months, am 1 the intention of the same companies to continue Jie use thereof ; such fact and suih intention being verified by the aflinnation beforo a Warden, ol the Managers or repi esentatives oi such companies. In the event of two or more plans bung considered worthy oi trial, the liovcrnmcni will determine in what manner tho '.'ompetitiou shall be carried on, and the beat plan discovered.
