Brierly is overwhelmed with the idea of Hawkshaw (the principal witness asainst him at his trial, recognising him, an-.l denouncing him to Mr Gibson as a re-, turned convict. He makes up l.rs mine, to leave the office, and is just going oufc of the door when, on tbe threshold, hemeets Hawshaw. He recognises him, but after enquiries finding that B»b is bent on earning au honest livelihood doe* not betray bim to his employer. Mr Gibson o»d Hawkshaw are laying out a> well concocted plot to entrap the forger* who are no others! than the two desperadoes Moss and Baltoo, The Jew enters and overhears Mr Gibson addressing his clerk as Hawkshaw, his suspicions are aroused and he warns hi* confederate, Dalton, who comes to theoffice so completely disguised that helulls all suspicion. Hawkshaw is- introduced to Daltou by Gibson, who- think* the housebreaker is a Londoo bunker i named Wray. The detective in the courseof conversation with him, tells him how bis poor mate ; was cruelly murdered by tbe Tiger, but adds that he will yet bo even with Jem Daltoo. After some further conversation Hawskaw and 1 Gibsonleave the office- together* the housebreaker takes advantage of their absence-,, and i* in the act of breaking open the safe when be is confronted by Btierlty who returns. A higWy drama-tie- sceneensues, Dalton. threatens to denounce h.m as- a convict if he does not le. him go. Bobdoss so r but the scoundrel is no sooner out oi his clutches t an he gets bis confederate to betray the secret to his employer. Mr Gibson enters, teiSs- Brierly he knows 3.1. Ac this moment May, attired as a bride witb her friends Julia St. Evremond (Miss- Williamson)) and c.hers arrive, A heartrendittg scene follows,, aud the- act cud» with Ffierly audi May being: east a drift iuto* tho world,, friendless. The 4th act rntrodaceg us to a lowpublic bouse kept by M. lt by- the- former proprietor of the Belli* Tue gardens, hero the two-evjlassociatesy Moss, amd D_dton, are to.je-l.er planning vilfainly, their desirebeing to- break open Mr Gibson's- offise. They have also got hold of young Sam r and are* bringing liim up to all kiuds of vico. Presently they are drstrtrbed by the navvies, amongst whom is- Brierly..
