Blakans, and to- distribute relief. He says no- idea can be formed of the exlentof misery and atrocities perpretrnted on both sides. Over 20,000 fugitive \ women and* children require relief, as also 17,000' Jews, and frOOO' Turks, Sulieman Pasha is blamed' at Constan* tinople foranneeessarily wasting valuable czroops in renewing attacks on- Shipka Pass, and has been ordfered to obey more closely instructions. The fighting at Shipk-a Pass was the heaviest in the war. Sulieman Pasha wrecked a whole army dkshing battalions against the Bussian- works. For three Hays 3,000 Russians held the Pass. The Turkish army were without food, watpr, and sleep, before reinforced, and fighting night and day for a fortnight, SuHcmam Pasha abandoning'theattempt on the 3rd September. The Roumanian- troops are reported to be in a bar! condition, iil-paid, ill-fed, and scourged with typhus fever. Mehemet Ali's victory at Kareslan was of a decisive character. The Kussians were strongly entrenched in a village, the Turks and Egypftiana ootnmenced theattack suffering heavily from batteries of three guns ; the engagement hecame gpneral and extended 12 miles. By four o'clock Karissan was in fl-imes, and the Russians gave way. The Turks then redoubled their efforts dashed through the Mazing viliagc like i pack of hounds. Tlio Russians were driven into full retreat. Telegrams relating to Mehemet Ali's operations say that seuious fighting'occured to the rrsht of Rasgrad. The Turkish army, under Mehked Pa*ha vras engaged all day, losses heavy on both sides. The battle now lies between Biela and Ablova. A fresh band arrived during the night, and the others mistaking them for Turks attacked* them, fighting all night. In the morning the mistake was discovered, but 700 had been killed. A tremenduons fire occurred in New York and rendered three hundred and fifty families homeless with great loss of life. Oat of a hundred and fifty workmen only a few escaped. The destruction of property amounted to a million dollars. Brighnm Young's death was followed by a quorum of apostles taking charge of the church. John Taylor, first apostle is virtually head. Brigham's property is probably worth two hundred million dollars, which he left equally between his wives and children; the mothers taking the income until the child is of age. Sulieman Pasha bo - operates with Mehemet: in pursuance of orders fromSeraskerat. September 29. There are signs of an- early and' severe winter ;• there is two inches of snow at Shinka Pass. It is believed'the campaign in Bulgaria is virtually ended. The Russians remain entrenched for the winter.
