Weather permitting, the first cricket practise of the season will be played in Srv-ith's Paddock, on. Saturday afternoon next. Wickets to be pitched at 2.30. All playor3 are requested to. attend. We have been requested to point out the great convenience it would be to suitors attending the local Courts if a rule were made to call ou and dispose of undefended cases before going into tliose in which counsel are employed. Ifc not infrequently happens uuder the present system that suitors whose business with the Bench is a matter of two or three minutes, are kept hanging about the Court for several hours to their great personal inconvenience. A cause list posted up at the door of tho Court house vottl I likewise- be a further guide to suitors. These are forms which are followed in moat of the Courts in the colony, and we feel swe that they need only to be mentioned'to bo acted upon bere. Cases of repudiation of instructions tobrokers in relation to transactions in mining shares have, happily, been of rare occurrence in Reefton, but we regret to learn that a case of this kind kas j.ust occurred which, it is not improbable,, will shortly com© before the Court. Of tkfl merits- of the case we at present know nothing, and therefore withhold names. Charges-o-f this character, however, when rightly founded reflect no credit, uivl it is to be hoped tliat the one in question may find amicable adjustment. We ave informed that an amateur concert entertainment ami ball, in aid of the funds of the Local' Hospital will shc-i'tly. be started. The sad intelligence which we publish elsewhere of the sudlen affliction which has. fallen upon tho family of his Honor Judge Westoo, will, wo are- sure, be read with the deepest sorrow. As indicating the progress of that most dreadful of all scourges to infantile life—scarlet fever—it may be stated that for months past evory possible precaution was taken in bis Honor's family to guard iigainst the contagion, but unhappily it j would appear all to no purpose, and an eldest son and daughter have fallen victims to its ravages. Tlio friends of JoJgo Weston in this district sympathise deeply with him in his loss.
