THE Provincial Council of Ofago being (l«»irous of stimulating inveutioii, and socuriiig' *.ho use oi gold saving apparatus iu connection with hydraulic mining' adapted to tiio purpose of extracting gold from auriferous cm^li more completely than any of the machines or methods at present in use, has voted the sum of £250, to be ottered as a bonus lor the invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as his Honor the 8 upenn tendon t may eeoiu fit. Wotico is hereby gi"en ii\ accordance with the voto of tho Council, that plans and proposals fov suuh un apparatus will bo received for consideration, up till the first day of August noxt ensuing. The following particulars are published for the information of intended exuibitor? of plans. The plans and proposals will be submitted to a body of judges, composed of experienced miners, and such other persons as his Honor the Superintendent may appoint, and iu considering them the following points will be kept in view : — 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan, and k» probablo cost uud tour and wear. 2. The readiness with which it can bo jecured in any part of a tail race, and be removed from one part to another and again scoured. 8. Its adaptability to the different widths and fulls of tail races used in different distriotß j to the varying quantities of water used either; by choice or necessity for. flushing the same j and to the different kinds of washdirt from which gold is obtained in the Provinco. Inventors are expected to be conversant with the machines and methods at present in use, and pot to oiler simple reproductions of the same. ■ They are olso expected not to offer reproductions of machines or mothods which have fallen jnto disuse. They can obtain practical information on these and other points, by application through the post to tho Central Mining Association at Naseby. If, in the opinion of the judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy of adoptiop by the minors in tho Province, the Government undertakes to iurnish copies of the sump to each of tho Mining Associations in the Provinco with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, and the paymont of the bonus will then be determined in the following manner, payment being duo within eight months from the date at *hich the copies of the plans and instructions have been issued to the various Miniug Associations. By the fact of tho appurutus being used by jftt least twenty-five sluicing companies iu the Province, employing an average of at least five men each, f^r the period of six months, and the intention of the same companies to continue the use thereof j such faut and 6uth intention being verified by the attirmatiou before a Warden, of the Managers or repiescntatives of such companies. In the evont of two or moro plans bring considered worthy of trial, the Government will determine in what manner tho competition shall be carried on, aud the best plan discovered. . As the bonus is only intended to itimulute inventive genius, every inventor may reap a further beneiifc irom his invention if he think fit, by taking out a patent.
