B. 130<S T US FOH GOLD-SAVING APPARATUS. nnllE Provincial Council of Otago boing JL VW'sirous of stimulating invention, and scouring UlO use oi gold saving apparatus in connection with hydraulic mining adapted to tho purpose of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than any of tho machines or methods at present in use, has voted the sum of £250, to be oil'ered as a bonus for the invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as his Honor the Superintendent may seem Ot. Notice is hereby gi^en ib accordance with tho vote of the Council, that plans and proposals ibv suoh an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till the first day of August next ensuing. Tho following particulars are published for tho information of intended exuibitore of plans. The plans und proposals will bo submitted to a body of judge?, composed of experienced miners, and such* other persons as his Honor the Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them tho following points will bo kept in view : — 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plau, and its probable cost and tear and wear. 2. The readiness with which it can be secured in any part of a tail race, and be removed from one part to another and again secured. 3. Its adaptability to the different widths md fulls of tail races used in different districts ; to the varying quantities of water used either by choice or necessity for flushing the same ; and to tho different kinds of washdirt from which gold is obtained in the Province. - Inventors are expected to be conversant with the machines and methods at present in -use, and not to offer simple reproductions of tho same. They are also expoctod not »o offer reproductions of machines or methods which have fallen into disuse. They can obtain practical information on these and other points, by application through the post to the Central Mining Association at Naseby. If, in the opinion of the judges appointed any plan shall appear to bo worthy oi adoption by the miners in the Province, the Government undertakes to turnish copies of the same to each of tho Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions as to inventions of tho invontors, and the payment of the bonus will then bo determined in the following manner, payment being due within eight months from the date at >yhich tho copies of the plans and instructions havo been issued to the vurious Mining Associations. By the fact of the apparatus being used by at least twenty-fivo sluicing companies in the Province, employing uu averugo of at least five men each, fjr the period of six months, and the intention of the same companies to coutinuo the use thereof ; such fact and such intention boing verified by the affirmation before a Warden, of tho Managers or repi cBontatives of such companies. In the event of two or uioro plans being I considered worthy of trial, the Government I -will determine in what manner tho competi- ', lion shall be carried on, and the best plau discovered.
