THE Provincial Council of btago being (lxsiroue of stimulating invention, and sucuring the uso of gold saving apparatus in connection with hydraulic mining adapted to tins purpOßo of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than any of tho machines or methods at present ill use, has voted the cum of £250, to bo offered as a bonus for the invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as his Honor the Superintendent may seem fit. Notice i<) hereby given in accordance with tho vote of the Council, that plans aud proposals for suuh an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till the first day of August next ensuing. The following particulars are published for the information of intended exuibitbr? of plans. Tho plans lind proposals will be submitted to a body of judges, composed of experienced miners, and such othor peraquß as his Honor the Superintendent may appoint, and iv considering them the following points will be kept in yie \v: — 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan,' and its probuble cost and tear and wear. 2. The readiness with which it can be secured in any part of a tail race, and be removed from one part to another and again secured. 3. Its adaptability to tbe different widths and falls of tail races used (n different districts ; to the varying quantities of water used cithorby choice or necessity for flushing tho same ; and to the different kinds of washdirt from which gold is obtained in the Province.. Ipveiitors are expected to be conversant with tho machines and methods at present in use, and not to offer simple reproductions of the same. They, are also expected not to offer reproductions of machines or methods whioh have fallen into disuse. They can obtuin practical information on these uud other points, by application through the post to the Central Mining Association at Nasuby. If, iv the opinion of the judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy of adoption by the miners in tho Province, tho Government undertakes to furnish copies of the same to each of tho Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, and the payment of the bonus will thon bo determined in the following manner, payment being due wituiu eight months from the date at which tho copies of the plans aud instructions have been issued to the various Miuiug Associations. By the fact of the apparatus being used by at least twenty-live sluiuing e6mpauies iv the Province, employing an average of at least iive ineu each, fjr the period of six months, ant 1 the intention of the aume ooinptunes to continue i.he use thereof ; such fact and suuh intention being verified by the affirmation before a Warden, of the Managers or repiescututives of such companies. In the event of two or more plans bong considered worthy of trial, the Government will determine in what manner the competition shall be carried on, aud the best plan discovered. As tho bonus is only intended to itiinulate inventive genius, every inventor may reap v iurther bcuelit from his invention if he think lit, by taking out a patent.
