From General Government, asking to be furnished wjth statement of tbe, number of miles of road under the control of local body to the 31st Deeem« ber. From S. Pizzey, complaining of the condition of lower Broadway. The correspondence as read was received. In reply to a question from the Chairman, Mr Munro, County engineer, stated the present route, of the Grey road could be shortened, and the gradient reduced, but not without interfering with, private property. The road, he said, had not been properly laid off, and would have to be re-surveyed,. He could no,t \?ork under the plans prepared. It would not be safe for the Council to rely upon the plans produced. They wanted plans that a contractor could understand. The. resurvey and preparation of fresh plans would occupy about ten days. A large number of the terraces shown on the prepared plan of the road line could be avowed, by altorii^a. the route, near CoutancUe's farm. After n disultory diseiission it w,>i<; resolved that tlic engineer slmuld re»visi: the line and report move fully upon tlie sngijfp^e.l deviation. In ro Cullen's uppliciti/Tn fop £'li com pensatimi for malicinus putting away of a punt wire, a' Lyi'll, the Council declined to grant tli e request, but would recom mend that applicant recoive a free license for such time as lie kept the ferry open. He the offer of J. I'ell, as to the m.s,in te.nan,ee of Larry's track, the engineer was requested to visit and report UDOn the matter, the opinion being in favor of having the wonk done, by day labor. With respect to the letter of P. Alexander, it was resolved to evacuate the premises, and the Execute, Committee was empowered to provide other premises. Respecting the complaint of Mr Brown, the Clerk was directed to take the opinion of the County solicitor, as to the power of the Council to prevent teamsters camping in the streets. Engineer instructed to inquire into the complaint of P» M'lnerney. The Clerk was instructed to procure copies of plans of all roads in, the. County. The enginoer was instructed to put men to work on lower Bjoadway. The Clerk reported with respect to the maintenance contract of Francis Kiernan, (Boatman's road) that the bondsmen. Messrs Dash and M'Guire, had been written to informing them that Kiernan's contract would bo cancelled, and that they would be called upon to pay the bond»money. Kiernan was present and expressed a wish to relinquish the contract Mr Dash, one of the bondsmen, was present, and asked that some reduction might be made in the bond-money, owing to his having been misinformed by Kiernan as to the nature and extent of the work undertaken. Tbe unanimous feeling of the Council was dead against any remission of the amount. It was tho fixed determination of the Council to keep both contractors and their bondsmen up to the letter and spirit of t?p,eir engagements, and on no account could a departure from that course be allowed. If people went into obligations of the kind with their eyes shut, it was their own fault. The action of the Council would, perhaps, make men a little more cautious. Mr Dash said he would not press the application, and he thought that the ' action of the Council would do good. After some discussion, it was decided to call tenders forthwith lot the formation of the first section of the G.rey road, from Lardi's downwards. Tenders for the res maining sections to be called directly the plans were, ready. Tkc. engineer was. empowernd to employ one n\au permanently, to repair all tracks in Connolly's contract.
The Clerk was instructed to sue for all unpaid rates. A general rate of Is in the pound was struck, upon all rateable property in the County. The follqwing accounts were presented, and passed for payment :—
The Council then adjourned unkJlWei?* nesday, 15th instant.
