It will perhaps be well to remind defaulters that under, the Rating Act the Couacil has power to levy upon propery for rates levied against persons, who, have left the district since the rate waa struck ; the rule being that in all cases the property is responsible for rates levied. Attention, to. this fact may spare many persona a good deal of expense aud annoyance. In the Warden's Court, on Monday last, on the application of Henry Jackson for the cancellatiou of tho Eovival lease being called on, the manager, Mr W. M'Lean, stated that arrangements had been come to between the Company and Jackson, which had led to an abandonment of the application. Jackson, who was present, confirmed the statement of Mr M'Lean, and expressed his desire to withdraw the application. Mr M'Lean said it was the intention of tha Company to put men to work in the mine at once. The El Dora,do Company, through Mr Thomas Bowlandson, applied for protection for throe months of the. two mining leases at Boatman's known as th,e El Dorado Extended. The reasons for applying for protection were that since Ist March, 1872, to 30th Tune lost the Company had expended £7217 in prospecting the in^ne. A recent suvvey had shown that they had, driven 200 feet past the line of reef without striking the lode. The Walhalla Company, v^hich wa9 between She El Dorado and $ie Just-in-Tirae, were driving in their ground to conneofc w,ithi the Just-in-Titne winze, and as soon a$ that work; was done tlie El Dorado, Cora pany would &p in a. better position to knpw the true course of tho reef. The West Coast Times, of the 25th, instant says : — It was reported in town a few days ago, when Mr Wijiliam Dpcherty came up from the south by the steamer Maori, that he hadibeen successful in discovering a copper lode at Dusky Bay. Mr Doohprty Bhortyy after, his arrival proceed to Otago, where, it was oaid, ho intended to apply for the neceo- ; aary. protection or for a lease of the ground on whioh the disoovery was. made. We now observe that the report had good foundatipn, as Messrs William Docherty and Neil Carmichael, at a, sitting of the Otago Waoje Lands Board, applied for and reoeived protectionto mine 500 acres of land for copper and, tin, at Dusky Bay. They first applied for a aineral lease for the extent named, but subsequently amended the application for protection to mine merely, The Otago papers speak favorably of tho proepeots as reported. The Waste Lands Board resolved, that, under the special circumstances of the. caße, tho ap* plication would be granted, and that a lease would bo granted to the applicants, on condition that a survey be completed within twelve months, tho area, and condition of lease. to be fixed on qompletipn of survey. The Grey Eiver Argus says :— Some misapprehension seems to exist aospecting the date of tho running for tho Cteeat Metropolitan Stakes this year, and many fanoy it will be the same as formerly— in tho second Tuesday in September. It will, however, run a week earlier this year, and so tho more likely to just clear tho ban which is impending upon all sweep 3 throught tho Colony, It is doubtful whether the numerous ventures

upon the Melbourne Cup will be allowed to | come off, as the G-overnment we leavu, have a TJill prepared to abolish them, and with the knowledge of last year's omission before them, they are not likely to let the opportunity escape in a similar tpannev tbia year. We hear that Mr Tonka is calling in all his book* from outside places ia be prepared for the emergency, but as the demand for them has been so great, judging from the amount sold in G-reymoutb, it is npt likely that many of those sent outside ore unsold. As soon as these returns come to hand his drawing will take place, and that will be in all probability before the Government takes any action. As tho quantity in hand ig so limited, the demand upon the spur of the moment at tho last, will likely complete the sale of the whole. The drawing may therefore be looked upon as coming off with certainty somewhere about I the middle of August.
