Details of disaster and destruction caused in the South Pacific coast by the earthquake and tidal wave of May 9 hare been received. The towns of Arica, Iquique, Pontabelli, Abos, Pabellon, Depica, Chenavya, Huonillos, Tocopilla, Cobya, Mcjillones, Deboleno, Artepagasta, and Chanarllo were nearly all de« j stroyed, and 600 lives lost. The destruc» tion at Pabellon is estimated at 20,000,000 dollars. Tillages for 23 leagues inland were ruined. The shipping of guano from the south deposits is to be indefinitely suspended, as all facilities in the way of launches, shoots, {[wharves, water condensers, and buildings of all kinds have been swept away. The destruction of shipping was very great, |and attended by serious loss of life. At Molendo, the railway was torn up by the sea, and at Arica immense damage was done. The United States ship Watere was lifted bodily, and floated miles north of her old position. Merchandise from the Custom House and stores were carried five miles distant. The earthquake levelled a large number of public buildings, private dwellings, &c. The people passed the night on the hills.
