A sudden surprise (says the Dunedin Guardian) happened to a devout old lady named Mrs Hesford yesterday morning. She was attending mass, as was her custom, at ■ eight o'clock, in St. Joseph's Chapel, and when kneeling down just inside the porch, when her attention was directed to a shawl covering a bundle, lying under a form alongside. At first she ;, imagined it was a portion of the garments pf an absent worshipper, nod she was about to examine it when an infantile, cry was heard, and at the same moment a tiny bullet head protruded through the folds. The bundle was at once overhauled. It was found to contain »n infant apparently about a fortnight old, dressed in white baby-clotbes, and wrapped up with a black plaid shawl, and an old woollen shawl outside. The police were immediately communicated wilh,,and^it would be seen by a telegram on Saturday that a woman .named Bridget Ryan has since been arrested.
