Dunbdik, July 5. The Eailway Committee meet on Mon day, to appoint a deputation to proceed t< Wellington. The Conference of Chairmen of County Councils has concluded. They have drawr up suggestions for amending the Counties Publio Works, Financial Arrangements and Bating Acts. Thase will be printed and forwarded to all Councils in Otagc District' and to the Colonial Secretary Mr. Vincent Pyke is requestedjto supporl these amendments in the House of Assembly. Chbistohubch, July 3. The Customs duties collected during the past quarter amounted to £48,938 The corresponding quarter last yeai amounted to £44,312. The merchants who lost produce bj the fire at the Export Shed, Lytielton, a short time ago, intend proceeding against the Government for damages Counsel has been retained, and the mercantile community are to be asked tc subscribe towards expenses. The police were sworn under the new regulations yesterday. Six men deolined to be sworn. Great dissatisfaction exists among the police at the new state ol things, and if swearing had occurred in summer time, a lavger number of men would have refused further service. Wellington, July 3. A good deal of discussion took place last night at the conference for suppression of intemperance, but an adjournment till Monday took place without any result being arrived at, though the following motion was proposed, " That conference approves and recommends the main principles of the Local Option Bill." The speeches were very moderate in tone, but considerable diversity of opinion prevailed. In the Supreme Court the Grand Jury made presentments to the effect tbat there was no legal provision existing in (he district for keeping an offioial record of brands and description of cattle slaughtered by butchers, and the wnnt of such records led to a great difficulty in tracing cattle, and the miscarriage of

Two previous con- ( victions haying been proved against him ; James Kerr, wife beating, 12 months ; E. S. Walter, stealing a c*sh box, 12 months"; George Morris, stealing from a Ctrnaman, 12 months. The mail steamer, Australia, arrived at San Francisco on the 28th June. She ! left Auckland on 6th ultimo. July 6. ' Sir Dillon Bell has been called to a seat in the Legislative Council.
