As we announced some time, since the primary work of establishing trigonometrical stations throughout the whole of Nelson South-Wesfc district is now in progress, the work having been completed to a point some three or four miles to the northward of Reefton, but the late wet weather has very greatly retarded field operations. A station has been established in the vicinity of Squaretown, another at Pain Killer, and a third upon the summit of a commanding spur on the west side of the Inangahua river, almost in a line with Broadway. The survey work now being performed ia merely the basis of future operations, as the minor triangulation has yet to be carried out, and the work will devolve upon tho district surveyors of Ahaura, Reefton, and Westport. Until this latter survey is performed, the work of bringing the various mining lease surveys of the district into consonance with tho fixed points referred ft> cannot, of course, be done, and it ia more than probable that when this is accomplished the result will lead rather to a confusion of existing surveys then otherwise, as all previous surveys having been deduced from magnetic rather than trne bearings, the boundaries will, it is feared, be found to show great divergences.. In this light then future litigation as to the boundaries of mining leases is not likely to profit much by the survey work now going on.
