BONUS FOII GOLD-SAVING APPARATUS. rrUIE Provincial Council of Otago being JL di-nirous of stimulating invention, nnd securing 'he u*o of gold saving Apparatus in connection wnh hydraulic miniug adapted to, the purpose of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than any of the machines or methods at present in use, has voted tho sum of £250, to bo offered as a bonus for tho invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as his Honor tho Superintendent may seem , fit. Notice U horeby gi r cn ia accordance with the vote of the Oouncil, that plana and proposals for such an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till tho first day of A ugust next ensuing. The following particulars are published for tlve information of intended esnibitor? of ; plans. The plans and proposals will be submitted to a body of judges, composed of experienced miners, and such other persons as his Honor tho Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them tho following points 1 will be kept in view .- — 1. Tho cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan, and its probable cost and tear and wear. 2. The readiness with which it can be sceured in any part of a tail race, and bo removed from ons part to another and again secured. «* 3. Its adaptability to the different widths and falls of tail races used in diiferent districts ; to the varying of water used either by choice or necessity for flushing the ; same ; and to tho different kinds of washdirt from which gold is ottaincd in the Province. Inventors are expected io be conversant with the machines aiid methods at present in use, and not to offer simple reproductions of tho same. They are also expected not \o offer ropro« duet ions of machines or methods which have fallen into disuse. They cau obtain practical information on these and other points, by application through tho post to the Central Alining Association at Naseby. If, in tho opinion of tho judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy oi adoption by the miners in the Province, the Uoverumeut undertakes to furnish copies of the same to each of the Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions as to inventions of tho inventors, and tho payment of the bonus will then be determined in tho following innnner, payment being due within eight months from the date at which tho copies of the plans and instructions have been issued to the various Mining Associations. By the fact of the apparatus being used by at least twenty-five sluicing companiis in the Province, employing an average of at least five men each, i'->r the period of six months, and the intention of the same companies to continue the use thereof ; such fact and smh intention bcir-g verified by the affirmation before a Warden, of the Managers or repi esentatives of such companies. In the event of two or more plans being coiuidered worthy of trial, the Government will determine in what manner the competition shall be carried on, aud tixo best plan discovered. As the bonus is only intended to itimulato inventive genius,, every iuventer may reap a further benefit from his invention if he think fii, by taking out a patent.
