IN A NG AUU A CO U NTY COUNCIL
The Council met at 2 30 p.m, on Wednesday l^st, there being present Councillors Bayfeild, Jjyrne, Caples, Dick, Irvine, and Kelly. In thp absence of Mr Brennan, Mr Bayfeild was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk read copies of correspondence forwarded since the last meeting of the Council. Mr Brennan here entered, and took his place in the chair. , The Clerk read a telegram, and letter received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Kelson, stating, in reference to the Council's application for a portion of the Court Houpe Reserve, that the land in question being required for Government purposes, no portion of it could be granted for the use of the Council.. From Christy Mindermann, asking the Council to grant him protection for a ferry, across the Inangahua at the Junction. From Messrs Haskin, M'Sherry, and Deeban, stating that by direction of the Judge of tbe Assessment Conrt they bad performed extra duties in amending the valuation list of the County, and asking for extended remuneration and, enclosing accounts. On the motion of Mr Kelly, seconded by Mr Dick, tbe correspondence aa read was received. From Mr Wardep Shaw, iptimating 'the intention, of the Government to,dis- , continue tbe employment of laborers on the Grey road between Lardi's and the [ Grey Junction. Mr Bayfeild presented the report of tbe Committee appointed to prepare Standing Orders, and read over the Orders as framed, which were assented, to seriatim aqd adopted as a whole. Discussion, ensued as tp, (be necessity of keeping men at work upon thp Grey road to keep trafßp opeq pending the com. pletiou of. the gap between Devery's Terrace, and the Junction. The Council concurred in thq.opinion ; that the day labor shonld be kept on at least unti} sqch time as the County Engineer. visited and reported upon tbat • portion of the road. Mr Butler, who was present, stated that he had arranged to visit the locality on Monday nest, when he. would be in a position to report to the Conncil as to the number of men required to keep the track open, until, the completion of the new road. It was eventually proposed by Mr Buyfeild seconded, bj^ M^ Kelly, anJ.earried, "That I,ko, men be engaged, to effect repairs upon the track, in question, pending the Engineer's report. '• The, Chairman anno<in,ced' that, ho h?d beon advised by teleuram, that a sum of £901 would be remmitted at nnce to the. credit of the County by th*?, Geppral,Government, hut that since the. receipt of the telegram a remittance bad) been forwarded through the Bank of New, Zealand, for only £8&l, and he was af a loss to understand the reduction. After some discussion upon the subject, Mr Kelly moved, and Mr Dick seconded, ".Thjit a, telegram be forwarded to the Colonial Secretary by the Clerk to the Coupcil asking for an, explanation concerning the reduction." Carried* Inspecting the letter of the Commissioner of Waste. Lands re ihe CourtHouse Keserre, Mr Bayfeild tqovedt and Mr Caples seconded, " That the Clerk communicate, with the authorities ip Wellington as to the prpbable.area of land required by the. Government for, public buildings on the reserve in question, and urging tbe application of the Council for a, portion of the Reserve for the erectipp of Coupcil Chambers. Regarding the. application, of Christy Mindermann, for protection for a ferry at the Inangahua Junction, it was, after dis-. cussion, moved by Mr Kelly, and seconded by Mr Byrne, " That the protection be granted for a period of three years at an annual rental ot 5-), an£ opon conditions to be imposed by the Council. Tbe fees, for crossing not to exceed, Is for men, and Ss 6d for swimming horses." Carried.] , A long discussion ensued npon a claim for £13. 17s 6d, sent in by Mr H. G. Hankin for services rendered in .amending the County valuation. The members were of opinion that the charge was excessive, apd, eventually it. was decided to refer the aceoupt back for amendment. A similar, account for £9 10s, from Messrs M'Sherry "and Deehan, wa-i similarly dealt with. A number of accounts w,ere then pre? sented . and passed f for payment. Mr Bntler, Cenaj^ Engineer, read a precis. oi his report upon the state of the roads in the northern portion of the County, reserving his detailed report for the meeting, of thf? Local Re venues Baud, which takes place op Monday next. _3_e Conncil then adjourned.
