THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 1877,

j The Report and Balance Sheet of the j Reefton Hospital as read at the annual • meeting of subscribers held on Monday Ipyening last, gives some interesting |nnd iHtisfactorv particulars of the working of the Institution during the past year. The report fete out by congratulating the subscribers and public generally upon tbe greatly improved condition of the Hospital, and also upon the incrensing support accorded to the committee. As might yery naturally be expected the demands upon the Institution are fast increasing, an4 attention is drawn to the necessity which is monthly growing ny>re and more urgent, for ac extension pf the present building, The in« crease in the demand* upon the Hospital will perhaps be best shown by the following comparative statement of the patients treated during tbe past few years. The report shows that during 1873 there were 13 indoor and 23 out* door patients,. In 1874 28 indoor and 28 outdoor patients. la 1875 52 indoor and 33 ontdoor patients, and dur« ing the l*st year 61 indoor and 31 ouU door patients. It is satisfactory to find, however, that while tbe increase has been so considerable tbe cost of maintenance has nnt grown proportionally. As a most gratifying evidence ot the increased measure of support which has been accorded to the Committee during the past; year, | we may quote the following figures J showing the comuarative receipts during the years 18*5-6. In the former year the income from all sources amounted to £715 19s. which was made up as follows : —faying patients £9 ; miners, £195 6a 6,d; entertainments, £38 3a 6d; companies, £42 19a ; and Government subsidies, £4.13 lQa. During the financial year which closed on the 3st March last, the total revenue was no le*B than £1164 2s 10il. contributed na follows: —Paying par tienrs, £67 17s 6d; miners, £251 5s 2d • entertainments, £314 6-> 8d; com. pam'es, £87 s«i; subsidies. £412 10s; and miners' strike gift, £30 13* 6d— thus showing tbe grosQ receipts to hate nearly doubled in the course of tbe year. A large percentage o? this increase is due no doubt to the growing confidence which the public has in tbe conduct of the institution, and furnjshea a exclusive test of the argument advanced that m long us the management of the hospital is efficient ample means will be forthcoming to help it along. The report speaks in terms of high commendation o f the medical officer, the wardsman, and in fact of the management generally, and it w pleasing to find that this estimate has been fully endorsed by Uie liberality of tb.e public* In a financial respect the report gives a very good ■ account of the operations of the Committee during fhe p,ask year. At the outset there was a liability of £117 13* 9d, which has been wiped off in nddition to granting an increase of $50 per annum to tbe gnWy of thei medical officer, and providing for a cook and laundress at a salary of £120 per annum. Tb'i total expenditure during last year is shown at £1197 03 3d, being an increase of only #4<U 4* 4d on that of tbe previous year. The medical officer's report gives full particulars pt the number and, character of tbe cases treated during tbe year, and concludes with a recommendation which is endorsed by the Com raittee as to the need for the erection of an isolated ward for the treatment, we presume, of infectious diseases. It is needless to say that tbe report and balance>sbeet was unanimously adopted, and a vote of thanks accorded to \he Committee.
